General Manager of the Industrial Directory Company

Speech of the General Manager of the Industrial Directory Company

Letter of the General Manager
of the Industrial Directory
The tenth edition of the Directory of exports and Industrial firms in Lebanon
(2018 – 2019) concurrently with the focused campaign carried out by the Ministry of Industry and value and the Association of Lebanese Industrialists to promote the
Lebanese industrial production, which confirms that the industrial suffering of persons working in this sector creates a common approach and synergy of the efforts of workers and those familiar with the affairs of this sector and its concerns.

If the advertising promotion of the Lebanese industry is necessary to create a national sense to this industry, and the introduction of how to reach this industry becomes
imperative to guide the citizen to his industry.

Therefore, it is very important to issue the 10th edition and previous editions of the
Directory according to the scientific bases and standards in order to introduce these products in a way that facilitates to the local and foreign consumers the reach of
Lebanese commodity as soon as possible.

In addition to covering 6208 factories owing to the field survey carried out by the
Management of the Directory under the supervision and sponsorship of the
Ministry of Industry, the Directory is characterized by focusing on very important
points that contribute to the promotion of the Lebanese industrial production,
prominently technical and detailed aspects of the introduction of the commodity as
the standardized international coding H.s.code was adopted, therefore all goods
produced by the Lebanese factories are introduced and their flow to the local and
foreign markets is facilitated in addition to knowing the rates of customs duties for the required commodities in Lebanon and about 130 other countries and the volume of import and export of this commodity from and to Lebanon.

The standard method adopted by the Directory to include information in writing and advertising made it a reference and a Lebanese mobile exhibition in the world markets as a result of its publication on a special website www.lebanon-industry.com , allowing stakeholders to know the industry of Lebanon accurately.

The directory,s website was ranked first on Google,s search engine, with 2000 users per day. This number is expected to double over the next three years to more than 3000 visitors as a result of upgraded advertising plan and campaign.

No matter how much we talk about the role of this Directory and its advantages, very important aspects of the role of the Directory in the history of Lebanese industry need to be highlighted as the efforts and high costs to complete the comprehensive field survey in Lebanon would not have been achieved without the long experience in living and experiencing the problems of Lebanese industry.

The most important practical results of the successive editions of the Directory is the
creation of the Permanent Electronic Exhibition for Lebanese Industries
www.madelebanon.com, which marks a fundamental turning point in the promotion of the
Lebanese industry as it is featuring the largest gathering of Lebanese factories in a
professional and sectorial exhibition which allows about 400 industrial firms to
showcase their products in local, Arab and international markets with the latest and top-notch
technologies developed at a low cost. We expect this exhibition to make an unexpected radical change in the marketing of Lebanese industrial production in the next stage.

We look forward that the representatives of the Lebanese industry, in particular the
Ministry of Industry and the Association of the Lebanese Industrialists, appreciate the
importance of this project by listing it amongst the first concerns in the field of introducing the
Lebanese industry, as this project has achieved rare benefits for the Lebanese industry in the field of introduction of its products which exceeded tens of attempts and projects of official
authorities especially over the past decades, despite the varying material possibilities.

This Directory… Credible & a based reference

Industrial resilience and creative success
A project loyal to the principles of the
industrial school

Since the emergence of industry in the modern history of Lebanon, the Lebanese industrialists endeavored to create a national dimension cause relevant to the introduction of the product, giving it a special identity, and promoting it with its added to showcase its heritage, in a set of quality,
excellence, elegance, leadership and creativity.

Practically, industrialists worked hard to communicate with various local, Arab and international stakeholders, and raised the bright national production. Our factories do not produce a commodity only but an integrated embodiment of a way of life and love for it. It is the concept of Lebanese creativity, Lebanese risk, and of Lebanese ambition, which shaped all in their own mix and flavor, the Lebanese industrial dream.

Despite the fact that we have and are still facing as manufacturers many
impediments with intransigence and determination, we did not neglect the
marketing and promotion as they are backbones in this sector. The Association of Lebanese Industrialists endeavored together with the Ministry of Industry
and activated its imports and organized exhibitions and opened means of
cooperation with the Industrial Research Institute and the European-Lebanese Center for Industrial Modernization, the Arab world, the European Common Market, competent consulates and embassies as well as competent authorities in African, Asian, and American continents.

In this context, we had to face without surrendering paralysis and disruption and we deemed on the other hand necessary to adapt to globalization, open exchange of information, enhance communication and to develop plans for distribution and marketing, thereby allowing hundreds of millions to see the specificities and features of our industrial production.

This trend reinforced in a documentary-scientific manner, the Directory of
exports and industrial firms in Lebanon. Therefore, it provided to us a brilliant competitive leverage in promoting the Lebanese industry and other supporting economic sectors in Lebanon and abroad and in the local and foreign markets.

Operations related to research, documentation and field surveys are
investment-related needs. Peak levels of GDP growth went always
together with creative obvious achievements in this sector.

This applies to the Directory issued in Arabic and English, which was
concretized through a field survey encompassing the Lebanese territories
and covering 6208 industrial firms. This Directory constitutes the main
reference for Lebanese industry. It is uploaded on the website
www.lebanon-industry.com and occupies a prominent position on the search engine Google and international websites, which gave impetus to highlight the Lebanese industry and made it accessible to millions.

We highly thank the entities who printed and distributed it and express all our wishes of success for this project loyal to the principles of the industrial school, which believes that the first and most important message for a better society lies in a creative production which will help in bursting the energies of
Lebanese citizens within their country, without migrating, and in transforming our own successes into collective ones and national creativity.

Good luck.

Speech by the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Beirut and Mount-Lebanon Mohamad Choukeir

Since its establishment, the Chamber of Beirut and Mount-Lebanon has been a basic reference and perhaps the only reference for promoting economic and trade activities in Lebanon in general, and in Beirut and Mt-Lebanon in particular.

Since its establishment, the Chamber of Beirut and Mount-Lebanon has been a basic reference and perhaps the only reference for promoting economic and trade activities in Lebanon in general, and in Beirut and Mt-Lebanon in particular.
Based on this important role, the Chamber achieved remarkable results in supporting the productive sectors in Lebanon, especially the Lebanese industry. The Chamber published documents, publications and manuals to spot commercial and industrial establishments, and compiled a list of its affiliated members for consecutive years, in addition to shedding light on economic activities in various media outlets, especially in the “Lebanon and Arab Economy” magazine issued by the Chamber.
The Chamber of Beirut and Mt-Lebanon facilitated communication between the different regions and governorates of Lebanon through its regional Chambers, and greatly contributed to the creation of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in Lebanon.
Moreover, the Chamber of Beirut and Mt-Lebanon embarked on media projects that promote economic activities in Lebanon, especially the Lebanese industry, and played a key role in sponsoring and supporting the publishing of the Directory of Exports and Industrial Institutions since 1982 until today.
This distinguished tenth edition of the directory received the usual support and sponsorship of the Chamber as it is based on a comprehensive field survey conducted by the Industrial Directory Company under the supervision and sponsorship of the Lebanese Ministry of Industry.
So, the directory that is issued in Arabic and English, is an accredited industrial reference for identifying Lebanese industrial production. It is in conformity with the Harmonized System (H.S Code) which is rarely adopted by Arab and Middle Eastern countries, and perhaps by industrialized countries.
The directory is published on the website www.lebanon-industry.com, making Lebanese products accessible to all local and international markets.
We hope that this edition will mark a new turning point by connecting the Lebanese market to foreign markets, especially with Lebanese expatriates due to the ease of use it adopted as this directory is based on new technologies and new information for those who want to gain knowledge of Lebanese products.

Industry Minister of Lebanon

This Directory… Credibility and Referentiality As in developed countries, the Lebanese industry, was supposed to be the cornerstone of the national economy, along with other productive sectors, particularly the agricultural sector which goes hand in hand with it. For this reason, we have been focusing on these two sectors for the last six years. I have endeavored and took necessary positions and decisions to support these two vital sectors within the framework of my ministerial competencies.

Credibility and ReferentialityAs in developed countries, the Lebanese industry, was supposed to be the cornerstone of the national economy, along with other productive sectors, particularly the agricultural sector which goes hand in hand with it. For this reason, we have been focusing on these two sectors for the last six years. I have endeavored and took necessary positions and decisions to support these two vital sectors within the framework of my ministerial competencies.
Nonetheless, the outcome of these steps remains limited due to the absence of a clear economic policy of the Lebanese government. These policies are not supposed to only be in the ministry’s visions, but also in an integrated governmental vision to support the productive sectors.
Despite of that, the industrial sector, with its investing and human capacities, proved that it could stand resiliently in the face of difficulties arising from the government “abandonment of responsibilities” and the challenges and obstacles facing the Lebanese production in internal and external markets, mainly: the trade agreements concluded with Arab and foreign countries which overburdened the Lebanese industry with additional challenges in internal markets in terms of competition and dumping as well as in external markets in terms of high cost of Lebanese exports, and the protectionism and subsidy policies adopted by foreign countries that export to Lebanon jeopardizing the Lebanese markets.
In this regard, the Ministry of Industry, in collaboration with the Association of Lebanese Industrialists (ALI) have completed 24 files aimed at protecting a large number of products Made in Lebanon through a number of procedures such as imposing specific fees on similar imported products made by a large number of Lebanese industries. These files are already submitted to the Council of Ministers, and we have high hopes that they will be enacted.
However, these challenges and difficulties have often motivated us to use incentives and complete our mission, as the proverb goes “Necessity is the mother of invention.” These obstacles did not impede the industrialists’ efforts to develop their production and seek marketing tools in most foreign markets. This is shown through the high quality of national industrial production and the international quality certificates granted to these industries.
Therefore, the issuance of the Directory of Lebanese Exports & Industrial Firms’ tenth edition, published since early 1980’s under the patronage of the Ministry of Industry and the participation of the Association of Lebanese industrialists, is a clear indicator of the industry’s resilience. This directory is developed according to the latest methods to properly introduce the Lebanese production; it adopts a Harmonized System Code (customs article) to classify the Lebanese industrial production. Information is collected from field surveys in all its issues and constitutes a comprehensive market for the Lebanese industry in its various financing and marketing activities, as it covers the banking sector with its branches in Lebanon and abroad, insurance and transport sectors, importers of industrial machinery and raw materials making this directory a reliable tool, and a reference of Lebanese Industrial products.
This issue is different as it was prepared based on a field survey carried out by the Industrial Directory Co. under the patronage and supervision of the ministry. The results of this survey show the realistic number of factories in Lebanon.
The Ministry of Industry, sponsor and supporter of the current tenth issue, and all previous issues, confirms its continuous cooperation between the ministry, the Association of Lebanese Industrialists and the industrial sector in supporting the necessary measures taken to develop this directory to achieve further benefits for the Lebanese industrial sector.
